Anza-Borrego Elopement: SoCal’s Dreamy Fall Destination
If you’re dreaming of a low-key, scenic, and out-of-this-world (but oddly close to San Diego) way to get married, an Anza-Borrego elopement might be your dream come true. Especially in the fall when the weather starts cooling down and it’s extra quiet and peaceful. Plus, fall sunsets are just something else
As an elopement and intimate wedding photographer based in Southern California, I can say with full confidence there’s something magical about this place. Then the summer heat fades and the air gets that fall crispness, the park’s magic is amplified (and you’re also more comfortable…). I might be partial; I had my private ceremony at Anza-Borrego, and it was stunning and so special. Here are a few reasons why a fall Anza-Borrego elopement might be exactly what you’re looking for…
Summer in the desert is absolutely brutal… but come October and November, the temperatures cool down just enough to make it comfortable to explore and celebrate without melting in the heat. There’s so much golden light, cool breezes, and clear, star-filled skies. It’s the ideal setting for an outdoor ceremony without the crowds or chaos of other popular SoCal wedding spots.
Unlike Joshua Tree, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is still a bit of a hidden gem. JT tends to overshadow Anza-Borrego, but I promise AB is just as deserving. That means fewer tourists and more space to roam. If you’re envisioning a wedding day that feels private, connected, and yours, Anza-Borrego could be the perfect spot.
From slot canyons to rolling desert hills, badlands to cactus gardens – Anza-Borrego delivers a wide range of landscapes that feel like you’ve traveled far without leaving California. And the added bonus? There’s no photography permit fee for small weddings and elopements (which is not the case at many other desert parks)!
If you’re planning something relaxed, intentional, and maybe even a little spontaneous, you can’t go wrong with Anza-Borrego. I’ve seen couples bring their dogs, pop some bubbly in the sand, or simply read their vows while taking in the view. You can hike, explore, or keep it simple and walk right to your ceremony spot.
Located just a few hours from San Diego, Palm Springs, and LA, Anza-Borrego feels far away from it all without actually being far. It’s an amazing option if you want that off-the-grid feeling without needing to fly anywhere.. Plus, local stays in Borrego Springs are charming and very close to the park. La Casa Del Zorro is one of the many great options there. If you’re coming from San Diego, Julian is also a fun place to stop and/or stay. It’s where I had my first look at a gas station where I changed! Romantic, I know.
Ok, the park does not welcome dogs everywhere but they are welcome leashed in most places. This guide is a great resource to see where your pup can hang with you. It’s definitely one of the more dog friendly parks in Southern California! If having your dogs be part of your elopement day is important to you, we will plan the park spots with them in mind.
I know how overwhelming planning an elopement can feel, especially when you’re not sure where to start. That’s why I include full planning support in every Anza-Borrego elopement I photograph. Need help choosing a ceremony spot, building a timeline, or figuring out if you need an officiant? I’ve got you! And if you have a sedan and opt for a spot that calls for an SUV, then I’ll drive us through the park.
And for fall 2025, I’m offering a limited number of Anza-Borrego elopement specials. For fall Anza Borrego elopements, I’m offering a free second location to explore. Options include, but are definitely not limited to: golden-hour portraits at Font’s Point or exploring a new trail together after your ceremony.
If your ideal wedding day sounds like something intentional, off-the-beaten-path, and fully aligned with you, I’d love to help you make it happen. Let’s plan something beautiful together – dogs welcome, desert wind in your hair, and love front and center.
