Sunset Cliffs Wedding Guide: How to Plan & What to Know
Planning a Sunset Cliffs Wedding in San Diego has many perks – dramatic ocean views and some of the most stunning sunsets in Southern California. There’s a reason it’s popular! If you’re looking for a place to get married or elope in San Diego, it’s probably crossed your mind as a potential option.

With that said, Sunset Cliffs isn’t a “traditional” wedding venue and requires some planning to make sure 1) you’re good to be there (permits) and 2) you can have the day you picture. Planning a ceremony here comes with a few important logistics to understand before committing! This guide walks through everything you need to know to plan a smooth, meaningful Sunset Cliffs wedding day.
Wedding ceremonies at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park require a Special Event Permit through the City of San Diego. Permits help protect the area, manage crowding, and ensure your ceremony isn’t interrupted by another large event. Note – even with a permit, it’s still a public space, and this doesn’t guarantee people won’t be around your ceremony.
Permits typically regulate:
Permits are issued through San Diego Parks & Recreation. It’s best to apply several months in advance, especially for popular sunset time slots. Here’s the link to apply!
There are several beautiful ceremony-friendly areas along Sunset Cliffs, each with slightly different vibes:

Sunset Cliffs is uneven and rugged, even parts that are easily accessible by parking lots. Paths can be narrow, cliffs are steep, and there are limited railings. This location may not be ideal for guests with mobility concerns, but it works beautifully for small, able-bodied groups. There are also some regions of the park that are more accessible, but not without some bumps!
Sunset Cliffs does not offer easy direct beach access for ceremonies or portraits. If sandy beach photos are part of your vision, consider pairing Sunset Cliffs with a nearby location like Ocean Beach, which has a sandy shoreline.
This combo gives you the best of both worlds: dramatic cliffs and relaxed beach portraits. If you aren’t a huge sandy beach person but love the drama of the cliffs and open view, Sunset Cliffs alone is perfect.
One of the perks of Sunset Cliffs is how close it is to great dining and celebration options. Whether you’re celebrating with a small group of people or 100, there are great nearby spots:

Sunset Cliffs is best suited for couples who value simplicity, natural beauty, and meaningful moments over elaborate setups. With thoughtful planning, it’s a stunning place to have your San Diego wedding and visit time and time again in the future.
