Wedding Party Photo Ideas (that aren’t awkward)

Wedding party photos don’t have to be stiff, awkward, or overly posed. Since your wedding party is made up of the people who know you best, the photos should feel personal and reflect the relationship you have! Whether your group is large or small, there are so many wedding party photo ideas that feel fun, relaxed, and not awkwardly forced.

Hey, I’m Beth – an elopement and wedding photographer based out of San Diego, CA! I love celebrating and capturing every couple’s story. As part of the LGBTQ+ community, I am honored to document love in every form. As a wedding photographer, I love suggesting wedding party photo ideas that feel genuinely like the group. Her are some of my many favorites…

Fun Photo Ideas – Movement Based

The key to not having awkward photos is… not feeling awkward. Movement, when your group is able-bodied, is my favorite way to help combat the awkward feeling of standing there just waiting to be photographed. Movement also inevitably brings giggles and interaction, which I’m 100% here for!

Action Shots

Here are some of my favorite wedding party photo ideas with lots of movement:

  • Walking together (classic, bonus if you bump hips and add some silliness)
  • Champagne sprays
  • Running, spinning, or dancing (or maybe all at once, why not!)
  • Celebratory hugs and cheers

These moments often create the most joyful, candid images where groups can share genuine smiles as they cheer you on for your big day!

Candid Laughter & Interaction

Instead of asking everyone to “smile at the camera,” I’ll often prompt:

  • Inside jokes
  • Group conversations (with the person getting married as the star, duh)
  • Shared reactions
  • Group hug

These are first can feel a little awkward, but after some time they look like you and your fave people just hanging out!

Front-and-Center Lineups

A classic with a modern twist:

  • One (or both) partner(s) in front
  • Wedding party lined up behind them

This works beautifully for some serious looking photos, and of course we can add the prom pose of stacking arms to the person in front of you. Hate to say it but it does look so clean and solid in photos.

Silly variation of this? Have your entire wedding party run through to the front and capture a little video of each person making their way through the “tunnel” – very fun!

Power Poses

I’m *such* a fan of power poses! It’s always fun to see some people totally get into it and others try it for the first time together.

  • Everyone strikes a power pose
  • Serious faces encouraged – the milllenial America’s Next Top Model watcher in me will encourage “smizing”

These images are iconic, confident, and often a favorite with couples who want something different.

Reception Group Photos (Flash Photos!)

For couples who want a relaxed vibe, stepping away from the reception for a few flash photos can be so fun. I usually recommend these as a supplement to group photos and not the main show, as these tend to happen after a few drinks 😅

These often feel:

  • Playful
  • High-energy
  • A little chaotic in the best way
You can also get a FULL group photo at the reception – totally chaotic of course but a fun thing!

Inside Jokes & References

If your group has a shared joke, phrase, or tradition let’s use it! Those details make your photos feel personal and irreplaceable.

Themed Outfits or Props

This could include:

  • Sunglasses
  • Matching jackets
  • Meaningful props
  • Outfit changes

This might sound extra AF and be giving high school theme day, but I promise they can be so fun and silly. Totally depends on the vibe of your group!

Parting words about wedding party photo ideas…

No matter how creative or unconventional you want to get, I’ll always make sure we capture:

  • At least one classic group photo
  • And then plenty of space to explore fun ideas together

So don’t be afraid to brainstorm – the best wedding party photos come from collaboration, trust, and letting the group be themselves.
