San Diego Beach Photo Locations for Your Wedding, Elopement, or Adventure Session

With all of the options for your San Diego beach photo locations for your session or wedding, I want to help you pick the one best for you! As a frequent beach-goer and of course wedding and engagement photographer, I’ve explored so many San Diego beach locations! San Diego is home to so many stunning beaches, each with its unique vibe and charm. When planning an adventure session or elopement in San Diego, you’re in a great place.

If you’re feeling the cliffs and more rugged coastline vibes for your photo or wedding location:

  • Sunset Cliffs: For those who crave dramatic cliffs, rugged coastlines, and epic sunsets (ok, duh), Sunset Cliffs is a winner. It’s such a San Diego classic for your beach photo location! If you’re wanting an area with extensive sandy beaches, however, Sunset Cliffs might not be for you. I also know of some coves right by Sunset Cliffs for more privacy!
  • Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve: Nature enthusiasts, this one’s for you! Torrey Pines has a little bit of everything. Sweeping ocean views, hikes (if you want – can also drive to top), cliffs, beach, and unique desert rock formations. If you’re up for it, finish your session or elopement with a jump in the ocean! Note: this location does require a photo permit, which I can help you secure.
  • Black’s Beach: If you’re after privacy and an almost untouched natural setting (and don’t mind the clothing-optional policy), Black’s Beach is a unique San Diego beach. It does require a bit of a steep hike to get to the sand! If you want to overlook Black’s Beach but not hike, you can also take photos from the top of the cliffs (still with ocean views!).

If you want a mix of beach and San Diego city vibes for your photo location:

  • Coronado Beach: For a vibrant atmosphere with views of the iconic Hotel del Coronado and a charming beach town, Coronado Beach is a great choice. There’s also Coronado Dog Beach if you’re wanting to include your dog off leash in your photos! Coronado’s versatility of many beach backgrounds along with its proximity to Coronado’s downtown area make it a great option for longer adventure sessions to go beyond the beach.
  • La Jolla Cove: La Jolla is home to many beaches, coves, and tide pools. If you’re looking for stretches of soft sand and turquoise waters, La Jolla beaches could be a great fit for your San Diego beach photo location. There are also many secret beaches that are less frequented than the main stretches!
  • Mission Beach: Conveniently accessible with ample parking and a boardwalk filled with restaurants and shops, Mission Beach is perfect for larger gatherings. Mission Beach offers miles of sandy beaches and rentals for many water-sports if you want to get really adventurous. Since it is so easily accessible, privacy is not common – but public bathrooms are, so take your pick!
  • Pacific Beach: Offering easy access and many nearby bars and restaurants, Pacific Beach is a laid-back choice for a fun and memorable session. It’s also home to Crystal Pier, which offers a unique (and shaded!) option for ocean photos. This area tends to be pretty congested compared to other beaches, as people love coming to the beach and spending a day at all the restaurants and bars.
  • Windansea Beach: If you want a local favorite with powerful surf (fun fact: I *almost* went with the tide here once… gotta get that perfect shot) and stunning rocky cliffs, Windansea Beach could be perfect! It’s ideal for a relaxed, intimate elopement or any other session. It’s also right by Bird Rock, a cute and walkable La Jolla neighborhood that’s perfect for some city photos too.

Wanting something off of the main path? Consider this San Diego beach:

  • Silver Strand State Beach: If you’re searching for a long, unspoiled stretch of sand, Silver Strand State Beach is a serene and less crowded option. By less crowded I mean… there have been times I’ve gone and not seen but a few other people. Silver Strand is just south of Coronado Beach and also offers a secluded hiking area just across the street.

Choosing the perfect San Diego beach for your adventure session or elopement is all about your vibes and preferences. Good news: you have many options and really can’t go wrong with any of them – they’re just different!
