Anza Borrego Elopement Planning: A Hidden Gem for Southern California Intimate Weddings

If you’re dreaming of a day that feels like just you, your love, and beautiful open desert sky – let’s talk about Anza Borrego elopement planning. Just under two hours from San Diego and a few from LA, Anza Borrego Desert State Park is the kind of place that feels completely untouched. It really feels like a different planet and has a special kind of magic. With golden sunsets, epic desert views, and typically not crowded, it’s a truly magical spot for couples who want something intimate and unforgettable.

Bonus: It’s one of the most dog-friendly parks around, so yes your pup can 100% be part of your elopement day. It’s also generally more relaxed than other locations, with many parts being unincorporated (in other words: less picky on permits).

Why Choose Anza Borrego for Your Elopement?

When it comes to elopement locations in Southern California, Anza Borrego is one of the most underrated gems. Here’s why I think it’s the perfect backdrop for your desert ceremony:

  • Breathtaking desert landscapes with incredible light all day long
  • Total intimacy and seclusion – even on weekends, you’ll often have the views to yourselves
  • Versatile backdrops like slot canyons, blooming wildflowers, and other-worldly rock formations
  • I’m admittedly biased… I had my ceremony here, and it has such a special place in my heart
  • You can visit time and time again on anniversaries and explore the park together

If you’re considering Anza Borrego elopement planning, you’re already choosing something more intentional and connected, and I love that for you.

When to Plan Your Anza Borrego Elopement

The best seasons for an elopement in Anza-Borrego are spring and fall. From February to April, you might get lucky and catch the famed superbloom, when the desert has so many beautiful flowers after a rainy season. Fall offers more stable temperatures, dreamy sunsets, and fewer visitors.

Heads up though for any season: Desert weather is unpredictable. Winds can kick up quickly and temps can swing fast. I always help my couples plan for versatile attire and low-fuss decor that still photographs beautifully. The wind chill can really catch you by surprise!

Favorite Park Elopement Locations

Your Anza Borrego elopement planning wouldn’t be complete without picking the perfect location. Here are a few of my absolute favorites:

  • Fonts Point – Dramatic views of the badlands, especially at sunset. It’s where I had one of my ceremonies and think it’s the most stunning place. It kind of reminds me of Grand Canyon. If you have your ceremony here, you do need a not-Sedan vehicle, as it can be a trek on a sandy, deeply pitted road to get here.
  • The Slot – A narrow, winding sandstone canyon that’s perfect for adventurous couples who want those glowy light rays filtering through the walls. This would not be an ideal location if you had any other guests though, as it can be quite tight.
  • Wind Caves – A short hike (less than 1 mile roundtrip) with big payoff. The unique rock formations are so photogenic and fun to explore. Like The Slot, this would also be recommended for just the two of you!
  • Literally Anywhere – If you have a larger group and/or any accessibility needs that make hiking difficult, there are so many beautiful fields and pull outs that can easily become ceremony spots. I’m happy to share a few of my favorites!

I’ll guide you in picking the best spot based on your vibe, comfort level, and how much exploring you want to do on your elopement day.

The Logistics: How to Plan Your Elopement Details

When you’re diving into Anza Borrego elopement planning, here are a few things to know:

Permits: You may need a special use permit depending on the size of your group and the specific location. I help all my couples navigate this so it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Best Time of Day: Sunrise and sunset are the sweet spots for dreamy light and fewer crowds. Midday can be harsh for photos, but we can always scout a shaded slot canyon if needed! Plus, if midday just works best for the rest of your day, don’t let the lighting deter you.

What to Pack: Bring water (lots), sunscreen, snacks, layers (also lots), sturdy shoes, and a plan and meeting point – cell service can be limited/nonexistent. I also send all my couples a personalized packing list based on their elopement plans.

Where to Stay:

  • Borrego Springs is the closest town, with cute desert rentals and cozy motels.
  • Julian (great for fall!) and Palm Springs offer more lodging and dining options.
  • For celebration dinners and lodging in one, check out La Casa Del Zorro and The Palms at Indian Head

Making Your Desert Elopement Magical

The heart of Anza Borrego elopement planning is about creating a day that reflects you and feels authentic. Whether it’s just the two of you and your pup saying vows at sunrise or sharing a picnic under the stars after golden hour photos, I’m here to help you plan every detail and capture it all.

I’ll take care of the logistics (permits, timeline, location scouting) so you can focus on soaking it in together. From finding your Airbnb (if you want help!) to making sure your ceremony spot feels perfect, I’m here for you. And of course for photos too!

If you’re ready for a stress-free and meaningful elopement day in one of California’s most beautiful hidden gems, let’s start planning. ✨
