Planning Your San Diego Boudoir Photos: What to Expect, Wear & How to Feel Prepared

So you’re thinking about booking you San Diego boudoir session (or maybe you’ve already booked – yay!). Whether you’re doing this to mark a chapter of your life, celebrate your body, or just because you’ve always wanted to, I want you to feel fully supported going into it.

When working with me, boudoir is meant to celebrate you as you are – however that looks and feels for you. Whether you want something bold, romantic, edgy, or playful, I love creating an environment and space where you’re comfortable and get what you want from the session. Since I know doing boudoir (or anything new, really) can be intimidating, I want to help you feel ready for your boudoir session.

What to Wear for Your San Diego Boudoir Session

Bring 1 outfit for The Essentials and up to 3 outfits for The Experience. What matters most is that you feel confident, comfortable, and like yourself. Some ideas:

  • Lingerie sets
  • Bodysuits
  • Oversized button-down or sweater over lingerie
  • Jeans + bra or tank (a fave for casual vibes)
  • Robes, jackets, sheer layers
  • Soft matching sets (briefs + bralette, tanks, etc.)

If you’re not sure what to bring, don’t worry – we’ll talk through options during your planning call or pre-session emails, and I’ll help guide you based on your comfort level and vision for the shoot. Here’s an example of how you can change up your look with layers! From the white button up to floral to a flowy black lace robe, there were so many looks and feels for one session.

💄 Hair + Makeup for your Boudoir Session: Totally Optional

Some clients show up fresh-faced and radiant, others love going full glam – it’s totally your call. You’re welcome to do whatever helps you feel most confident. If you want to book hair and/or makeup, here are some local recommendations:

  • Makeup – Artistry by Samantha Rae: Samantha specializes in natural, soft-glam makeup! She does not have a client minimum, and she might have travel fees depending on the location of where you’re getting ready.
  • Hair and Makeup – Meleah Makeup and Hair: Meleah brings 20+ years of experience in her field!
  • Hair and Makeup – Mobile Beauty Team: Mobile Beauty is a team of several hair stylists and make-up artists that always travel to you (hence the name).

Feeling camera ready means something different for everyone, so please don’t feel pressured to look or prep a certain way. If we’re shooting indoors, you’ll have space to do any touch-ups before we start.

Here’s an example of how changing makeup even during your session can totally shift the feel of the photos! She started with a bold, red lip and changed to a soft neutral gloss.

Setting The Vibe: Music for your San Diego Boudoir

I’ll build a playlist based on your favorite genres or artists (or you can connect your own music to my speaker). We can easily adjust the music vibe to whatever empowers you the most for your boudoir session!

Here’s what you need to know to prepare for your San Diego boudoir session with me, whether you book The Essentials or go all-in with The Experience.

What Makes My Boudoir Sessions Different

I genuinely love creating a safe space for people of all body shapes and identities, and boudoir is such a beautiful way of building that with you. If you’re looking for a super glamorous and airbrushed experience, I am not your photographer! My experience and photographs capture and celebrate you as you are.

There’s zero pressure to pose in ways that don’t feel right. I’ll guide you with suggestions, but you’re always welcome to say no, suggest something else, or take a break. I’m of course there to give you guidance and help you feel and look your best, but you totally control the comfort and direction. If you feel more comfortable bringing a partner or friend along, go for it! They can make such good DJs and hype people too. They are always welcome – I just ask you to let me know before the session.
